Orthodox Church in Medan perseveres despite great hardship

Christ is born! Glorify Him!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2011!

Since Fr Daniel opened our parish St Sergius of Radonesh in Medan City in 2007, our mission has been growing steadily. There are many difficulties and challenges but we persevere. One of the hardest is that we don’t have a place to meet or even a chapel in which to worship.

For now we meet in the living room of my home where we hold our Sunday Liturgy and other services. But that does not deter us. We are determined to fulfill Christ’s command to preach the Gospel and accomplish what He called us to do: Build a Church and make our Orthodox faith known in Medan City located in North Sumatra.

We believe that the failed seventh century mission of the ancient eastern Christian of the Syriac tradition in Pancur and Barus, North Sumatra, should not be repeated in our day. To make this vision a reality, we need help. We need our own property on which we can build a Church to declare to our neighbors that Christ is Risen and show them our Orthodox tradition. Not having a Church building is a big obstacle to our mission work in this part of Indonesia.

Nevertheless, despite these difficulties we actively minister to the spiritual needs of the people around us.

Below are some pictures of our work in Medan. I pray that these will encourage you to pray for us in our struggle in bringing the Gospel of Christ to our country.

Yours in Christ,

Fr Konstantinus Gultom and The Parishioners of St Sergius of Radosneh Church.
